Urban Krag is an indoor rock climbing gym in Dayton, Ohio built inside an old church building. The atmosphere is quite impressive.
Fun
If you've never been to a rock climbing gym before, I highly recommend treating yourself to the experience. This was my first time at such a place and I had a blast. I went with my cousin and her friend who were both very sceptical about the whole. The both nearly backed out as soon as we arrived and saw what we were getting our selves into. But by the end of the evening everyone was very positive about the whole experience.
Exercise
Most beginners, including myself, focus on climbing with the arm. This tires you out very quickly. The goal is to climb with your legs as that is where all of your power is and will keep your stamina up longer. Needless to say all three of us were completely exhausted after 3-4 hours and very sore in the following days. Having used up all of my strength, I was literally falling off the walls. But don't worry, I was perfectly safe...
Safety
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."
- Helen Keller
This quote is proudly displayed on the wall inside Urban Krag. Nevertheless, each climber must first be certified before being allowed to climb. The certification class is held whenever it is needed. Climbers are taught how to tie knots and work the belay. The class lasts about a half hour.
Cost
The cost seemed reasonable. We went on a Tuesday so we got free gear rental. I have never been to other climbing centers, so I cannot compare their price. As you can see below, you should be able to climb for about $12/day if you plan it right.
Belay certification $5.00
Daily pass $11.00
Shoes $4.00
Harness $2.00
Tax $0.77
Total $22.77
And that's all! I hope you enjoyed my review, and "Climb On!"
