RESOLVED!
Issue Summary (Acer 5570Z input issue)
Symptoms:
- Dropped keystrokes on double keypresses
- Inconsistant key repeat delay
- Jumpy "stuttering" touchpad
Plugging in an external USB hard drive (not a flash drive) makes touchpad entirely unusable ***only 1 confirmed report of this symptom so far***(Meng has confirmed this does not occur with his 500GB drive. It is probably a symptom of my IDE to USB adapter cable exacerbated by the 5570z input issue.)
- At any text entry, type "11223344556677889900--==--00998877665544332211" a few times, and note the unregistered keypresses
- At any text entry, press and hold any key and notice the repeat delay goes fast then slow, then fast, etc. at about 1-2 second intervals.
- Repeatedly make circles with the touchpad and notice that the pointer moves smoothly, then jumpy, then smoothly, etc. at about 1-2 second intervals.
This Issue has been tested and confirmed on the following Operating Systems:
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
- Linux boot disc
- FreeDOS
Cause: Defective Hardware
Fix: Best Buy replaced my Motherboard (part# MB.AZI06.003ACE) and Touchpad (part#?) which resolved the issue for me. For another person, Acer replaced his "USB DC Board" (part# 55.TDY07.002) which resolved the issue for him. Replacing just the keyboard did not resolve the issue for me.
Workaround: Use an external mouse and keyboard.
Response from Acer: All Acer reps request we call Acer support 1-800-816-2237 and send in our laptop for repair.
Interesting Note: The keyboard works correctly when booted into the system BIOS.

This problem I got with my Acer laptop keyboard is pissing me off, and it's a pain in the ass to get Acer to acknowledge it.
In order to help other people with a similar problem, I've decided to document my research and communication here.

I called Acer Technical Support, the dude said, "Take it to best buy to have it serviced." So I went to best buy where they could do nothing. While at Best Buy I found that their two 5570Z display models both have the same keyboard issue. There was also a third Acer of a different model with a perfectly working keyboard. So I called Acer Tech Support again. They suggested I update the bios to the most recent version (ZR1_3503.WPH). I did that and it did not resolve the issue. Third Acer Tech Support call: I got the standard reaction of "send it in." A waste of time and money. I decided to call back tomorrow to speak with a higher level support rep.
That is unless Eric, who has all this information, can somehow get it to the people who write the bios updates.
Oh, one more piece to the puzzle. I booted to a linux CD and the problem is there as well at the command prompt. Dropped keystrokes and inconsistant repeat delay. So you see, it's not even Microsoft related.

Eric,
I need a fixed BIOS update for my Aspire 5570Z. This is not an issue that can be easily resolved by speaking to a first level tech support rep. This needs to be escalated. Why don't more people complain about this issue? Simple, the problem does not present itself if you type slow, or if you use a docking station/external keyboard.
Further Diagnosis:
I have noticed a quirk that may be related to this issue. When I hold down a key so that it repeats, the repeat delay is not constant. The pressed character will visibly repeat quickly then slowly, then quickly then slowly, and so on. Is it possible there is some sort of timing issue here? An issue of timing might cause a keyboard to omitting keystrokes. The inconsistant key repeat delay is not caused by high CPU usage either (usage remains under 5%). I have a fresh install of XP Pro installed on the second partition, and every detail of this issue persists in XP Pro. I have not yet attempted a linux boot disc to see if the issue persists there as well, but others suggest it would.
Other Reports Of Similar Issues:
Here is a thread from 2006 detailing this issue on an Aspire 5670 and a TravelMate 4000. The BIOS fix for the TravelMate 4010 is mentioned but obviously doesn't help these people or me. The issue is not present when using a USB keyboard:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/laptop-support/119822-acer-laptop-missing-keystrokes.html
Here is a review from 2005 suggesting the TravelMate 3201XCi has "missing keystrokes":
http://www.notebookforums.com/archive/index.php/t-64011.html
Here is the missing keystrokes issue on an Aspire 5672WLMi:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2392114
Here is the missing keystroke issue on a different brand laptop, the Averatec C3500. Here they state "No, pressing harder doesn't work." And it's the exact same problem as with Acers:
http://www.tabletquestions.com/tablet-pc-averatec/2916-averatec-c3500-keyboard.html
Another keyboard problem affects users of the Aspire 4520. This one is a different problem, one of lag. It has been narrowed to a BIOS issue, and it helps show that many people have issues with Acer keyboards with the only solution being a specific bios update. It was found that disabling the touchpad (Fn+F7) can be used as a workaround for this issue, but that does not help with missing keystrokes:
http://www.havelaptopwilltravel.com/acer-4520-keyboard-lag-could-be-a-bios-problem/
I've experienced dropped keystrokes on a different model Acer laptop (a TravelMate 4200) I used to use for work less than a year ago.
One of my previous clients, a small business owner, uses an Acer TravelMate C310 tablet laptop. We replaced his keyboard but he continues to live with the missing keystrokes issue. This issue has supposedly been fixed with a bios update.
Some users of HP and Toshiba laptops with dropped keystrokes suggest a link to power management software, a malfunctioning battery, or synoptics touch pad software. However, my troubleshooting in each one of these areas yielded no results, so I have ruled them out.
I'd really like some confirmation from Acer that this is an issue and it is being addressed. I realize that corporations are evil and are sure to always act in their own best interest, so maybe this is an issue quiet enough to ignore? Maybe a money saving design decision was made and it's side effect was a few dropped keys? Simply replying that Acer cannot reproduce the issue is not an option. I have too much evidence to the contrary.
I again leave this in your hands, Eric. It's possible you may not even have access to the people that can fix this, but thanks for putting forth the effort.

Subject: Keyboard Missing Keystrokes
Question / Problem:
I have seen this issue personally on 3 different model Acer laptops. I have researched though google that others are experiencing it, and it has been going on for years. I just bought this laptop and am surprised to see that the Missing Keystrokes issue has not been resolved. The issue is: if you type too quickly there are occasional keystrokes omitted. This can be easily reproduced by typing, "11223344556677889900," as quickly as possible on the laptop keyboard.
Here are my results from typing that just now: "112234455667889900" (note the missing 3 and 7).
As I understand, a BIOS update has been released to fix this exact issue for the TravelMate C310, but not for any other model. From what I can tell, this is happening with every Acer laptop model, and from what I read the problem persists in any operating system. Please tell me you have a fix to make my primary input device work the way it's supposed to.

Hi, I've got the same problem with 5570Z. I wrote to Acer support but it seems they don't care to answer at all. It's been 1 month already.
Did you try emailing eric_walker@tx.acer.com directly?
I last emailed Acer for a status update and he replied with the standard, "As this issue is not happening with any of the units we have here, we are unable to easily find a remedy. If you would be willing to send your notebook in for us to look at and find the cause, this will help us help you get this fixed."
I doubt they even tested on a 5570Z.
I've just been trying to live with it, but I may try calling in again and speaking to a manager.
My email case number is WEB11669. Unfortunately, Acer phone support has no access to email case numbers.
Matt,
Thanks for your overview; we've had a similar problem and this at least makes it less scary in the sense that it probably isn't an indication of a forthcoming meltdown. We have the same double keystroke issue with 5570Z (from Best Buy) when we have our external monitor plugged in, but it clears itself when we use the notebook's own screen, or as you suggest, plug in an external keyboard. --JT.

Hi,
Same issue with my 5570z. I thought I was on to something with the Dkbfltr.sys key filter located int the system32 directory, but if you are having a problem with linux that points to a lower level problem - hope acer finds a work around. Changng the repeat rate and delay seems to help a little.
Thanks for your comments. The more people we can document with this issue, the more likely Acer will get some solution for us.
I been using this program to test the delay rate
http://www.zimm-co.com/PressTheSpaceBar/pressthespacebar2000.html
It really brings the problem to the forefront.
I also trying to take the keyboard out and clean the connectors, that did not seem to fix the problem. I manage to get it once to where it worked perfect, but that was just a freak accident. Right now my best in that game is like 25-30key, where on my other laptop i can easily average 45+:( If u get any updates, please post again!
I decided to email Eric at Acer again:
Eric,
Of course the issue is not happening on the units you have there. You need to try it on a 5570Z.
I have posted this issue on my blog and since then 4 more people have reported this issue with their 5570Z. That brings my count of defective units up to 7 out of 7. I've not yet found or heard of a non-defective unit.
You want me to send in my unit, I want you to get Acer to send you your own 5570Z.
To recap the issue is twofold:
1. Dropped keystrokes on double keypresses
2. Inconsistant key repeat delay
To reproduce, open notepad or any text entry field and:
1. type "11223344556677889900--==--00998877665544332211" a few times, and note the missing keypresses
2. press and hold any key and notice the repeat delay goes fast then slow, then fast, etc.
I'd say the issue presents at least 95% of the time, but it will occasionally not present for no obvious reason.

Here again is the reply from Eric@Acer:
"We have been unable to replicate this issue on any Aspire 5570Z here. I would still recommend that you send you notebook here for evaluation so we can help you remedy this issue. For assistance with this please contact Acer Technical Support at 1-800-816-2237 M-F 7am-9pm CST and Sat-Sun 8am-5pm CST excluding holidays.
No further assistance with this issue can be provided via this email forum."
It sounds like BS to me, but maybe someone would like to volunteer to send in their 5570Z? I might be persuaded to do it if I'm allowed to remove the HDD first, and if I can get free shipping through Best Buy.
Well seeing how I live about 5 miles from Acer of America, I was going to take my in to have them take a look at it. Do you have any idea where their service center is at?

Sorry, no phone number. You might try just stopping by or calling the 800 number.
I just got an Acer Aspire 5570-4315 from BestBuy in Canada on a whim. I've only had Dells for the last three laptops. Dropped keystrokes was one of the first things I noticed, and it's only been half a day and it's already driving me crazy. I am definitely typing correctly and firmly enough. Apparently I have BIOS 3505, I don't see any newer versions. Is there a fix for this issue? I need a fix, I have 14 days to return this unit. I'll watch this space for comments during this time!
All the latest updates are in the comments.
There is no fix.
Acer says, "send it in."
Hopefully the bastards at best buy will send it in whether they let you exchange it or not.
Good luck and please keep us updated.
OK but... does this affect all units, or just some? What I mean to say, is, can Acer actually fix it if I send it in? Or if I try different ones at Best Buy, are others likely to work? Or will all models 5570-4315 have this issue? This does suck. I'm happy with the unit, no dead pixels, but the typing is just broken.
If I have time this week I'll call the 800 number and ask if I can bring laptop to their San Jose location. Right now it's my only computer so sending it to Acer is no good. However I should be able to give them an ample demo of what the problem is.
I tried the demo model at Best Buy and it *seemed* better. I only had a few dropped keystrokes, and I can't be totally sure that wasn't the fault of my typing. The key repeat rate seemed smooth. Multiple backspaces and cursor operations seemed OK.
Then again, it may be perception due to the fact that I wasn't typing as fast standing up as I might have sitting down properly.
At any rate, it had the same BIOS (3505), keyboard driver, key repeat rate etc. AFAICT.
On the laptop I purchased, it's horrible. If I do 5 rapid fire backspaces or cursor ops, sometimes only even 2 will get through, it's that bad.
Has anyone considered that it may be a hardware issue? Maybe the cable isn't properly seated or something? Such an issue would affect all OSes, not affect an external keyboard, and might affect only some units.
I do have the service menu on my HD somewhere so if you want you can try to take it apart and look at the keyboard connector. When i opened it up, the keyboard connector was nice, clean and connected for sure. Just to be sure i disconnected and reconnected and problem still existed after.
Found out that their only service center is in Temple, TX. So if someone live near there, go for the fix...
The history of dropped keystrokes with other Acer models have been resolved with BIOS fixes.
Both 5570Z display models I tested at Best Buy also had this issue. One (with 2GB RAM) didn't present right away, but did after I continued to test it. I even showed this to a few employees but I doubt they took any action. My exact model number from the white label on the bottom is 5570-2067.
I believe Best Buy will ship to Acer, TX for free because they are an authorized service station according to fixmyacer.com so if you can bare to part with your new laptop, that'd be the way to go.
Alternatively, we could try harder to get Best Buy to send in one of their defective display models. I'd go into Best Buy today if my city wasn't in the process of burning to the ground.
If anyone does send in their laptop, it might be a good idea to print out this page and close it in the laptop.
What about the trackpad (mouse)? I swear it has the same erratic dropped events as key repeat and typing. Moving the mouse is choppy, and scrolling (e.g. in web browser) is choppy.
I'm sitting here with my Brand new Acer, and also my work laptop Dell which I just installed Vista on an hour ago. Both are clean. The mouse seems erratic on the Acer, smooth on the Dell. It's also smooth on my home Dell. Same mouse settings, same OS, and the trackpad itself is probably made by Synaptics in all cases.
I just plugged in an external wired laptop mouse, and it seems much smoother.
I had sent an email to Eric of Acer asking for an update, I got the "don't send email directly to support people" reply which isn't helpful.
With the mouse and keyboard being so erratic, I don't think I'll be able to keep it. It seems fine with external keyboard and mouse, but I can barely use it as it is.
I booted into the Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Desktop CD (Live CD). The mouse seemed much less erratic, and although I could still get it to drop keystrokes, it seemed less prone to do so. Now this is a stripped down Linux running on the machine from a CD (not HD). Maybe the performance load is lighter so the problem is less noticeable? Maybe also that's why it was harder to get the problem to present on a machine with more RAM (2GB vs. 1GB). I wonder about booting to just DOS or something extremely simple, if the problem is gone or barely noticeable.
Keystroke issues still present in FreeDOS 1.0 fdfullcd (Live CD). Need BIOS update I guess. It's one thing for it to affect text, but I find it particularly infuriating when doing rapid fire backspaces or cursor movements. Ironically, the dropped characters themselves call for rapid fire backspacing and/or cursoring to correct.
Good news: I found a newer BIOS, 3508, on a taiwanese site. Bad news: the keyboard issue is still present. Actually, without a changelog, I don't know what this revision is supposed to affect.
Another thing I have learned: the KBC (keyboard controller) firmware is a separate flash, distinct from the BIOS. I have no idea what KBC firmware revision we are currently running. I did find (again on taiwanese sites) what are likely newer versions, but the changelog didn't suggest any fixes for dropped keystrokes. If anyone can find out more about KBC firmware, please post here.
is there any chance you can post link to the sites so I can check out if the KBC firmwares?
This is where I found the 3508 BIOS: http://benyouhui.it168.com/thread-575554-1-8.html
I've also seen that BIOS version for the 5580, which seems to have used the same BIOS in the past also. Does anyone know if the models are identical? The 5570 is a "Best Buy exclusive"... could it be that the 5580 is just the non-BestBuy version of the same laptop?
This thread confirms for Acer C312 that a KBC firmware upgrade fixes missing keystrokes and generated keystrokes for that model.
http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/showthread.php?p=62006
This page has a KBC firmware 1.37 (which seems to be a later version than most places I've seen):
http://benyouhui.it168.com/thread-474513-1-1.html
But hold on! It's for 5540, 5560, and 5590. (I think 3280 is the some sort of underlying model number for all of those.) Whereas 5570 and 5580 seem to be 3216. I don't know if this KBC will work for us, and at any rate the changelog doesn't mention keystroke fixes.
This site appears to be the one shown in the image (or similar with slightly different content):
http://stkts.sertek.com.tw/notebook.nsf/Notebook-os%20View?OpenView&Start=110&Count=150
In general, it appears the Taiwanese sites have more goodies than the American or even the European sites.
I haven't actually been able to even tell in the BIOS setup what KBC firmware version I currently have. Does anyone know where it is listed?
Basically my approach right now is to try and figure out what KBC firmware I have, and whether there is a newer one (even if only on Taiwanese sites) that I can try. Ideally I'd know beforehand if it worked on my model 5570, and if it will actually fix the issue. I have read bad stories of flashing with the wrong KBC firmware and the problems this can cause (bricking the laptop, at least till it's fixed). Part of this question is, which models share KBC hardware (and therefore firmware) with the 5570?
Bear in mind that Asia and Europe don't have Best Buys (I think) and therefore searches for 5570 won't be very fruitful.
Sorry, 3216 is the older version of BIOS (before 3505) that 5570 and 5580 shared.
Give me a day or two. I'll take off the keyboard and check out the part number. That should give us info to atleast which keyboard manufactor and maybe even a clue to who makes the keyboard controller
Sorry guys I haven't updated. It has been a busy week.
I downgraded from vista to XP this week and the problem has virtually 100% gone away. Now a key gets dropped maybe once every 50 or 60 letters i type and it's great. It's like night and day, atleast the machine is useable and acceptable now.
I will still try to take it apart to look at the keyboard parts today or tomorrow.
Meng,
Glad you've found some usability.
As I've said, I dual boot to both Vista and XP, as well as a linux boot disc. I've gone through 3 different BIOS versions. Nothing has resolved the issue.
As someone mentioned earlier I am also starting to believe that the touchpad is jumpy and latent corrosponding to the inconsistant key repeat delay. This one is a bit harder to test but if you keep making circles on the touchpad, you should notice that the cursor moves smoothly, then jumpy, then smoothly, etc.
Hey Abemore
Did you try the website I posted way above?
http://www.zimm-co.com/PressTheSpaceBar/pressthespacebar2000.html
That should give you much better indication of how bad the issue is and which OS system will have what effect on it.
Have u tried to disable the touch pad to see if it helps? the other thing i have heard is to take out the battery when using the ac/adapter will help to resolve the issue considerably.
Yes, I've tried the Press The Space Bar game. But I'm not so concerned with how bad the issue is, as I am concerned that there is an issue.
I've read those things as well. Removing the battery and disabling the touchpad have absolutely no effect. I just tested them again to be sure.
I found the keys to drop keystrokes, key repeats to vary, and the touchpad to be jumpy (not smooth compared to other laptops). External mice and keyboards are fine. I believe the issues are related, probably a timing issue, BIOS or firmware, as the problems are present in FreeDOS and Ubuntu Linux live CDs. Upgrading to BIOS 3508 did not fix the issue. Latest chipset drivers etc. also did nothing.
I just returned the laptop to BestBuy for a refund a few hours ago, during my 14 days grace period. I'd be happy if the BIOS issue was fixed, but can't accept it the way it is, especially since Acer seems to have had these problems for quite a while and doesn't seem interested in fixing it (can't reproduce it my ass).
I'm still interested in whether this problem gets resolved, as it makes the difference as to whether I can look at Acer models or not. I'll check back here periodically. Thanks for your help and good luck!
It would be interesting to know if Best Buy intended to send that returned laptop to Acer for repair.
And even more interesting to know if it gets repaired.
This is what I found on the back of the keyboard

Thank you for this site, the issue with the dropped keystrokes has been driving me crazy as well. I purchased my Aspire 5570z from Best Buy in Michigan in May/2007, and unfortunately I blamed myself for making dumb typing mistakes, thinking I just needed to get used to the new keyboard, that is until after the time period had expired in which I could have returned it, only to realize that this was not "user error." I thank everyone (obviously, not including Acer Corp.) for all the time and energy that is being put forth to find a fix to this highly annoying problem.
I have just ruled out a hardware issue.
I did this by booting into the PhoenixBIOS and attempting to reproduce the keyboard issues there. The keyboard worked flawlessly in the BIOS never once dropping a keystroke or altering the repeat delay.
Your move Acer.
So I asked Eric @ Acer if he'd any news yet and he responed:
"I have no further information on this than I did last time."
...then he went on to give me further information...
"This issue is being worked on by our engineers in Taiwan. As soon as a fix has been made, it will be posted on our website."
If that's true, it's good news for us.
Wow that's great news Acer is working on this issue. Let's hope for a firmware/fix soon!
WE got it !!!! Guys !!!
Finally, they are gonna take care of our problem.
Hi, I have same problem .My model is 5570-2977 from Staples. I am also going to try to install XP on system and see if that removes the problem. In the meantime does anyone knows how to disbale the "Home" key right next to the "Backspace". I keep hitting it by mistake and it is giving me much more problem then the dropped keystrokes. M email id is sfcswf AT gmail DOT com.
I see you guys typing the model number from the white sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Are these all 5570z's? It would be important to know if this is happening on the standard 5570's as well.
Some think XP reduces the severity of the issue, but it does not resolve it.
MapKeyboard is a free program that can remap your keyboard.
I have the same damned issue and got the same response from Acer. They said they didn't know of the issue.
ACER is made in China and must be subject to the same scrutiny as their pet food inspections (melamine), toy inspections (lead), etc.
TAKE THE HINT, ACER. These issues can also be escalated to the media. OWN THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT.-
I have the same problem, either

I have had the same problem with a Acer Aspire 5570z I bought at Staples. Running Windows Vista, it always drops repeated keystrokes. I hope someone can fix this problem. If it helps, the sticker on the bottom of my laptop says MFG.Date 0706 Aspire 5570-2977
I've had enough. I called suppoort and got a service request number. I'm going to send in my laptop because this is bullshit.
You need to register a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You also need to complain to Best Buy. Best Buy was useless, but the FTC will investigate.
I'm not sure it's time to register a complaint just yet. I don't know of anyone who has sent in their laptop as Acer requests. Maybe it is a hardware issue? Maybe Acer will do everything they can to resolve the issue after they get my laptop? Dunno. We will see.
Lets send emails to Federal Trade Commission
maybe they can take care of it.
Would reporting it to FTC help ? It is too much of a problem and ACER should either release the new bios or replace our laptops with other comparable models
I'm following this best I can. Seems this is the best resource. I have 2 of these laptops and they both started with the issue.
I fiddled around with the keyboard repeat rate and managed to lessen the issue on one of them, but it's still there.
The second laptop is still bad and frustrates me even to do the simplest typing on. I type close to 70-80 wpm and this keyboard stops me pretty much in my tracks.
I can also confirm that the touchpad seems to stutter a bit when going in a circle, which may be linked somehow with the characters not coming up fast enough. Almost like there is a bottle neck for input information.
I just wanted to post on here for us not give up on this... if anyone discovers new information post it here or post a link to other resources and forums here so we can get more exposure on this issue.
BTW... I have completely "upgraded" this laptop to Windows XP Pro and purchased a bluetooth module on eBay from "Oldegg". Both WinXP and the bluetooth module work amazingly well. So if anyone needs info about that let me know (drivers and what not). cazwell220@gmail.com
Good luck to us all in finding a solution to this ridiculous issue.
Mark
Ohhh.
I am not alone...
I have 5570z
Damnnn !!!
The same issue...
Please let us know, if you have any solutions
Thanks

Looks like I may have found a new symptom:
When connecting my 40GB external USB hard drive, the touchpad becomes entirely unusable (wont move, or is very eratic).
Sometimes disconnecting the drive returns the touchpad to it's crappy "normal" operation. Sometimes a reboot is necessary to get it back to "normal". A USB mouse always works perfectly.
Connecting my 32MB USB flash drive does not break the touchpad.
I am using this IDE to USB adapter cable to connect the 40GB drive.
Can anyone else with an external hard drive confirm a similar result?
Hi,
I might have found a way to reduce the key drop problem. It is still there buy not as annoying as before.
Yesterday I upgraded my RAM to 2GB( 2*1 GB dual channel Kingston Value-RAM) and since then I have seen very few keydrops. It might just be a one off case or may be false positive, but it something worth looking into. So if someone else could try the same experiment and post their experience that would be great.
Thanks
Just to add onto the above post I have not done any firmware upgrade but after I did the RAM upgrade I just went to device drivers > Keyboard driver > upgrade. ALthough it didn't upgraded anything and kept the old driver but it might be one other factor to reduction of keydrop problem.
Test 1 : 11223344556677889900
Test 2: aassddffgghhjkkll
Test 3: zzxxccvvbbnnmm
Test 4: qqwweerrttyyuuiioopp
Only in test 3 I missed one keystroke - j-.
Best of luck to all of you !
I agree.
2GB of RAM seems to reduce the severity of the issue. but it still exists and that is unacceptable.
I'd still like someone else to please confirm symptom #4.
Alright... I am typing this on a computer with 2gb of ram... and I can confirm that the issue is less as well. Agreed that it is still unacceptable.
Also... For those looking for Windows XP drivers I have put them on my website and made them all available to everyone. Including the wifi drivers.
http://www.mcaswell.com/drivers
I will also post the BIOS if/when it is ever released there.
Good luck all...
Mark
I'll link that for you:
http://www.mcaswell.com/drivers
or
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5570/
Official FTP is also good to check for drivers and updated BIOS and such.
Alright...
I gave my laptop to Best Buy today.
They are sending it into Acer for me.
We will see what happens.
Guys,
I tried all of the methods.
I downgraded it to 512 of Ram
or upgrade to 2gb of ram
None was useless
Maybe the problem is based-on internal cache or keyboard bios, something like that...
But, whatever it is, this issue shold be examined by an expert from Acer, (if they care.)
Guys,
Even if they solve this problem,
I will never and ever purchase any Acer items again...
Called Acer for a status update:
Rep said they haven't received my laptop.
Called Best Buy for a status update:
Geek Squad guy is pretty sure it was sent to the manufacturer and they are waiting on a replacement keyboard.
I'm having the exact same problem, I'd like to see how best buy handles yours before I go through the nightmare of giving them my laptop for service. I just had them service a tower I bought for a friend for their wedding, it took a MONTH to get it back, and it's not fixed. They are absolute idiots there, geek squad, all of them. No quality help in that store.
I assume you will get your laptop back in the same condition as you sent it in. Does best buy have any policies about replacing a computer that they cannot fix? I asked them that last time, and it seems like they just don't like customers at all...
I'll ask about the laptop when I bring the tower back in for replacement, which will be by force if necesary. The store manager will be hearing my complaint if they don't...
I thought it was a great deal on this laptop, then I go to upgrade ram and it only can take 2gb.. :( sadness. Then I start to use it, and I type fast, so of course i'm getting errors on every line I type. I'll check back in a few days!
Dave
Oh yeah, best buy can see where your computer is at almost any time, if they sound suspicious, ask to see the screen they are looking at of the status...
It has now been 14 days since I gave my laptop to Best Buy.
I called BB again today for another status update:
Geek Squad guy said the keyboard they ordered is expected to arrive on the 4th.
What is your plan of attack for when they give you the laptop back with a new keyboard and it does the exact same thing?
I plan to bring the battery with me when I pick it up. I'll test it right in front of them, then hand it right back to them.
This is what I'm expecting, but I'm hoping I will be pleasantly surprised.
Abermore:
I have a 500 gig external seagate drive USB HD attached pretty much at all times and I don't have a problem with the touchpad at all. It could be the IDE to USB adapter cable thingy you are using. My external was a store bought external.
Keep us updated on the returned laptop from BB!
Thanks Meng.
Yeah that IDE to USB adapter also affects my other laptop's touchpad, but to a much lesser degree. Strange since its just using built in windows drivers and a mouse is still unaffected, but oh well. Glad to have another test result!
I have exactly the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5920, which I bought here in the UK from Tesco (Major supermarket - think Walmart).
This is the first I've heard of this issue with the 5920. And I can't find any other reports via Google. All I can do is keep you updated on my progress and it may or may not apply to you.
Yes, I have found reports of similar problems with other Acer laptops, but not with this model. I'm not sure how many 5920s have ben sold. Are they on sale in the US? I shall ring Acer support on monday.
Acer Aspire 5920-6661 appears to be for sale in the US. I found it on newegg.com, buy.com, and bestbuybusiness.com
After 19 days my laptop is finally returned to me.
According to their notes, replacing the keyboard is all they did.
I am typing this on my 5570z. I thought the issue was resolved. It is not. Well at least it was working correctly for 20 min. I'm going to take my laptop back to best buy now.
dammit.
Well, I had a feeling that would happen. Please let us know what happens now. Be sure to ask them what they plan on doing for you, since you don't think it's fair that you should lose a few month old laptop for two months to not be fixed. Might want to try demanding that they replace it for you, with a different newer model. Make sure it's something with better specs than this one. Damn I'm typing this on mine right now and it is really annoying me having to proofread everything!!!
Holy crap, there is a 2nd level of Acer support. I'm on hold for it now.
Well, that was pointless. Back to best buy it goes. Apparently those bastards never actually sent it in to Acer... they just ordered a replacement keyboard... bastards.
My best buy store will ship my laptop to the best buy service center tomorrow. Hopefully it will eventually get to the Acer service center this time.
The geek squad girl said she'd put a "rush" on it, which made me feel happy.
This time I attached the Issue Summary to the laptop with lots of tape, highlighted some key points, and wrote on it in big letters, "Send to Acer!"
Lol.. Those bastards!
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the "put a rush on it". They told me that bit two weeks into my tower repair, which they said was done and ready to be shipped back. Still took another two weeks to get it back. I'd suggest immediately getting the head of the store idiot squad to help you, and let him know that you don't appreciate being lied to...
I just received my 5570Z from the Acer repair facility. It went in because it would not powerup.
The repair not indicated that they replaced the "DC board."
The good news is that the keyboard problem seems to have gone away! Of course I have only tested for about 10 minutes.
The disk was preserved with my login and applications intact.
The bios version is v1.3505 dated 04/10/2007. Not sure that is new or not.
v1.3505 is the latest bios. Can you please keep us updated on the new machine with the replaced DC board?
As of this date no currently available bios version fixes this issue.
Please test it longer. After my keyboard was replaced I got 20 min of no symptoms in both XP and Vista. Then it came back exactly as before.
I have a few hours on it now and it seems much better - I don't have any missing keystrokes!
Again - this is the same (untouched) software load that I had on it before.
The actual sheet calls the board "USB DC Board" - part number 55.TDY07.002
I wonder if there was a problem with one of the supply voltages contributing to the problem. It may be a coincidence because they could have gone in and fixed whatever caused the keyboard problem without documenting it.
I will keep you posted.
This is very interesting.
The cause could very well be a bad DC Board. Maybe the advanced stage of this issue is the laptop not powering up. Symptom #2 and #3 makes me think inconsistant supply voltage. And DC power is used whether on battery power or AC adapter. Even symptom #1 (dropped stokes) is inconsistant. So this could be the cause.
Hi,
I am going to go out on limb and call this keyboard problem fixed.
I have about 8 hours on it now with various amounts of cpu loading - different applications running - such as virus scan reading the disk, etc., and no keyboard drops.
I really wish I had collected more data on running processes and hardware info before sending this in for repair - but of course I couldn't power it up!
No worries, liberty53. In my testing the symptoms were unaffected by cpu load or which apps & processes are running.
After my new keyboard, I sometimes got 20 minutes of no symptoms just after booting. It didn't matter if I ran a bunch of programs and kept testing or if I just let it sit for 20 min lightly testing occasionally. Nothing ever made the symptoms better or worse.
I don't believe voltages are reported in the BIOS so maybe someone who still has an affected 5570z on hand (mine's in the shop) can install a voltage monitoring program?
Name the program. I'm waiting for your results before I bring it in.
Some programs that report voltages: Motherboard Monitor or SpeedFan
Hi,
I had the laptop on overnight and microsoft installed updates and rebooted the machine.
Still no keyboard lag of any kind.
I tried both Motherboard Monitor and SpeedFan. MBM didn't have a config for this ACER, and SpeedFan showed temperatures but not voltages (I couldn't get any of the voltage features in SpeedFan to display anthing). I will look around later for another program. It is possible if I can find an accessible testpoint to try and measure this myself with a calibrated DMM - but won't be able to get to that right away.
FWIW - CPUZ shows a core voltage of 1.213V
The mainbord Chipset is a Intel
i943/940GML Rev 03 - you may want to verify this with CPUZ
Day 7 of second servicing (day 26 total) status update from the Geek Squad:
Looks like they still are refusing to send it to Acer. They ordered a "motherboard, keyboard, and upper case". No one is quite sure what "upper case" exactly is. Maybe they damaged the case while taking it apart? Hopefully the motherboard contains the DC board.
I asked the guy to add some notes that replacing the DC Board might resolve the issue. He said he would note that.
I don't know how long Acer took to service Liberty53's laptop, but paying for shipping to Acer might be less of a hassle than going the free shipping via Best Buy route.
On voltage monitoring:
There is NextSensor and there is also an update to Motherboard Monitor
Hi,
The turn-around was very quick with ACER. excluding shipping transit time it was only a few days to repair.
Looks like the USB DC board might be a little module in the corner of the laptop held in by a phillips screw. Looking at it now - I have a hard time believing it would be causing the keyboard problem.
NxSensor doesn't seem to want to run under vista - but I just tried it quickly without looking at the readme - will get back to it later.
Try the program called Notebook Hardware Control. It actually allows u to set the speed/voltage and monitor them.
Day 10 (day 29 total). Got my laptop back.
Services performed this time:
1. replaced motherboard
2. replaced keyboard (again)
3. replaced touchpad
All symptoms seem to be gone (even #4 which only affected me). I'd guess the motherboard is what did it.
So let us know if it ever stutters again. mine is really annoying... And checking and altering power settings with that notebook hardware control didn't have any obvious change.
Dave:
No stuttering or symptoms since the new motherboard.
This new keyboard seems to have shitty pressure sensitivity, but that's it. As long as I type hard enough, I have no problems at all. Get your laptop repaired! :)
Ok! I'm gonna bit the bullet and take it in for my weeks of service :( very sad really. I need a laptop at most times.
I'll also bring a copy of this thread and all relevant docs to persuade them to not dick around and just change the mb.. Is your bios the same version as the rest of us still??
yep bios is still 3505. hard drive/data was left intact. good luck.
People,
i had the same problem with the acer 5570z.
Well, on Windows Vista i installed FIRQ.ZIP downloaded from acereurope and the keyboard lag problem is gone!
Hope it works for you all!
PS.: i´m using the 3508 bios, but it was working with the vista bios too.
ps.: if i can help, my mail is liviofox@gmail.com
Hmm... are you sure about this, Livio?
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5570/vista/Drivers/FIRQ.zip seems to be only available for Vista. And it only makes the following registry edit:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC5-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0000]
"Dongle_A_Type"="7"
"Dongle_B_Type"="7"
But this input issue is independant of OS, so I have to doubt this would work.
ops... I´m sorry... The probem gave me a small break but it´s back.
I did something that stopped the problem for one day. Or it´s random... I will try other things ans if it works, ill let you know.
I updated my bios just a few minutes ago.
now, the issue seems over.
But I will let you know later...
Acer 5570z
Win xp pro sp2
Bios 3508
Since my motherboard was replaced, the issue is gone, but there is still a slight stutter in the key repeat delay (it's not debilitating like it was before; repeat delay is solid on my desktop PCs). It doesn't seem to cause problems, but it's not normal so I'm noting it.
I too update my BIOS to 3508 to see if it resolved the remaining slight stutter. It did not. And since Acer doesn't like to tell us what issues their BIOS updates fix, we'll never know if they ever intentionally address this issue.
I've got the same keyboard lag issue with my 5570Z, and unfortunately I've had the machine longer than 30 days. I've tried the Synaptic Pointing Device stuff but no luck, and when I download the 3508 bios upgrade I'm unable to open the .wph file. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Anon:
It's 30 days (actually, I think it's 14 days) for an exchange from the retailer.
But the laptop comes with a 1 year parts & labor warranty from Acer. And Best Buy is an authorized Acer repair location, so take it in and get it repaired for free.
You need the winflash utility to apply the 3508 BIOS. It should come with the BIOS. Try downloading an earlier BIOS version and see if the winflash utility is there. Or look for a nearby link.
I got the same keyboard issue on my 5920 , it is over when i disable keypad ( fn+f7 ).
does a bios update fix it ?
Fn+F7 disables the touchpad on the 5570z and it does not resolve.
I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 3680, Stuttering mouse, missing keystrokes and repeating problem, but it just started happening about a week ago. No ideas on how to fix it though.
Paranormal:
All I can say is read through this page and hopefully some of the comments or research will help you.
The symptoms sound exactly the same so I'd guess the fix is the same.
My company bought 10 5570z's and they all have the same keystroke problem. Acer has not helped and since it is for work, I can not afford to be without the system. Are you saying that if I replace the MB and update the BIOS, the issue goes away?
I know the above is a lot to read...
AFAIK, a BIOS update never resolved the issue for anyone.
Replacing the MB and touchpad resolved my input issue. Because 2 things were replaced there's no way of knowing which was the culprit. I suspect it was the MB.
The other guy said replacing his "USB DC Board" resolved his input issue. Maybe this is part of the MB?
Two things seem certain: (1)hardware is to blame, and (2) Acer is a bitch.
nothing has been done
acer bitch
I'm getting the same issue with the Acer 5570z running Ubuntu Linux. It worked initially with Windows Vista but ever since installing or running any distribution of Linux I'm getting this missed keystroke problem. I'm operating with 2gigs RAM and Ubuntu 7.10
ive had a 5570 for a year now. i beleive when i had the preinstalled vista os i updated bios and it went away. Now I wiped vista recently and put xp on, the only way i can seem to temporarily resolve is by fn+f7 and disabling the touchpad...so my guess is the touchpad driver...or something is screwing with it.
Alright... here is what I have found on this issue. I have changed it on my computer and seem to be having MUCH more responsive keyboard. I will be testing it on another 5570z computer tonight and I will know definitively if it is better or not. Here is the link... and the instructions.
Alright... after just typing all that.. I can say that it is typing MUCH better... I still haven't restarted my computer, but just adjusting the settings in the synaptics settings has helped a ton.
I'm on WinXP... so for you Vista guys... YMMV.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=252283
There is some mention of a KBfilter patch from MS that I have not tried yet, so I don' know about that.
hope this helps someone.
Mark
Mark:
Thank you so much!!! That simple solution worked really well. My dropped keystroke even in vista has pretty much down to 1 per every 5-6 lines of typing. The laptop is actually usable now.
I highly suggest anyone with the problem looking at the link Mark posted and try it out. May not work everyone, but did work wonders for me.
I purchased my Acer 5570z in 2007 and I started having problems with it 2 wks after and on an on there after. My battery will now not charge; sometimes it will not recognize the pwr supply and will not power up at all; the touch pad is crazy no matter what you do to adjust it, and it has error message saying program is not functioning correctly. I have reinstall the program several times and gave up on that resolving anything. I am told that the hardward is the issue - the motherboard. It has been in repair countless number of times before figuring out the problem. Finally, I wrote a written complaint. Acer responded immediately - do a written complaint- and offered to fix the problem for $450.00. Two independent computer stores state that the Acer laptop is not worth sinking that kind of money into when one can purchase a new laptop for $300.00.
I think the above post that suggest writing the FTC is what everyone should do. There should be a recall on these laptops. Acer addresses these issues by trying to taking more of your hard earned money. The amount of money they ask for to repair is ridiculous. They should be giving us money back.
I will not give them any more of my money for this junk. I will write "written" complaints and I suggest all of you do the same. Maybe this will lead to a needed recall. Blogging to the right people and agencies is what will help us. WRITE A WRITTEN COMPLAINT TO FTC AND YOUR LOCAL BBB. TAKE THE TIME TO DO THIS; IT HELPS.
hi i have some issues with my laptop the keyboard does not respond i highly need your help please and thanks a lot
The keyboard works correctly when booted into the system BIOS.
