Read part 1
I was messing with my soft lenses again last night, and I found that they still suck. Vision is still consistently inconsistent with all 3 pairs. I actually see less blur without the lenses. In addition, with the Bausch & Lomb PureVision Toric I can see the edges of the optical zone... bad. And the CooperVision Frequency 55 Toric and Preference Toric lenses still burn my eyes... maybe I'm allergic? I read that CooperVision's Proclear lens is the benchmark for daily wear comfort. It is made with a very biocompatible material called omafilcon A.
GP Lenses - Day 4
5 hours of wear time today. Felt pretty much the same as yesterday. Still seeing the edges of the optical zone. I probably need larger diameter lenses. The edges mostly go out of view when I open my eyes real wide.
I also feel like these bitoric GP lenses will sometimes rotate out of position and cause even more irritation and blinking. It's like turning a lens that is fitted on the side of an egg. The edges would dig in and stick out. I hate being astigmatic. Maybe I should get laser surgery to correct just my astig?
Finally, I've noticed that vision in my right lens is not very good at all. Maybe a wrong prescription?
GP Lenses - Day 5
Oh God, I'm going insane. Why aren't these stupid lenses getting comfortable? Somebody kill me please...
On a more positive note, today I found that while LASIK is not ready to correct my +6.00D of hyperopia (farsightedness), it can easily correct my -3.00D of astigmatism. This should allow me to wear non-toric CLs which don't rely on rotational stability for visual acuity. The down side is $4500 for LASIK.
6 hours. I am so unmotivated to continue this...
GP Lenses - Day 6
3 hours 45 min today. Irritating. Damn you.
GP Lenses - Day 7
NO. Not today. I don't want to. I have an appointment tomorrow. I'll wear them then just to prove they suck.
Update February 6,2008
I am wearing the GP lenses again for the first time since my appointment 4 days ago, and I do believe they are getting more comfortable. But they still don't seem to fit right, and my budget Costco optometrist is an idiot. Dammit.

Stick at it!
I suffer from very dry eyes to the point where ten minutes after putting a soft contact lens in my eye, if I take it out by pinching it, it stays stuck in half (that's how dry they get)!
So, GP lens are what I wear now. I remember I was in so much discomfort for the first couple of weeks and then I suddenly realised that although I could feel the lens, they weren't uncomfortable any more.
Just don't get me started on windy days and dust. Ouch!
Ha ha, thanks for the encouragement Paul, but I've already returned the GP lenses to Costco. Maybe I gave up too soon. And maybe part of it was that I didn't want to deal with this shabby optometrist anymore.
I guess I'll just wait for LASIK technology to improve.
hehe, can't say I blame you for giving up. I was exactly the same and if it wasn't for the fact that I can't get good vision with glasses, I'd have given up too!
It's a shame you have such a reaction to soft lens, though it's always worth checking back now and then to see what the latest advances are. Soft lens seem to be improving at a rapid rate at the moment.
LASIK is tempting but ironically you still end up wearing a contact lens for a while after the surgery (bandage lens), and to make matters worse, it's not like you can just remove it if it irritates you.
Good luck anyway. :)
I have an eye condition that basically requires RGP lenses. So I've been wearing them for the past 15 years or so. They were very irritating at first, but it does get better. Also, the fit of the lens really matters. Find an optometrist that specializes in fitting RGP lenses and you'll have found a new best friend. Having an expert fit the lens to your eyeball will make a HUGE difference in how your lenses will perform. I still have issues with irritation and dry eyes, but most of the time that's because an eyelash found its way underneath the lens. However, I still remember the pain of the first couple weeks, so you're not alone!
