Well... since the fall of Stage6, high quality streaming video has been pretty hard to come by. My once favorite site, QuickSilverScreen (QSS), lost all of it's HQ content and started linking to crappy quality flash video like all the others. (Note: QSS appears to have some DivX content again, but the streaming speed is WAY too slow... lame.)
NinjaVideo.net has been silently lurking in the shadows for the past couple months (since Feb 08), but video playback on their site was shitty and uncertain and the gods knew it, so they recently released the NINJAVIDEO HELPER. This tiny program controls the video stream and makes all video playback on NinjaVideo awesome, fast, and certain. This helper program has since evolved into a java applet that runs in a new browser window.
Now NinjaVideo is kickass:
- + Only High Quality DivX content
- + Fast working videos (requires ninjavideo helper)
- + Nice library of content
- + New content added several times a day
- + Every video has a download link
- + Videos stay up for a long time and are seldom deleted.
- +/- Podcasts. Ninja loves to hear themselves talk... but they tend to ramble
- - There are lots of complaints of the arrogance of the staff. Take my advice: Stay away from the forum. Don't try to give back. Save yourself the headache and just leech the vids. You'll be much happier.
- - The full page AdBrite ad is annoying... but a clever person can block it...

You definitely haven't been banned, that's for sure. The time out message must mean it's a problem with your isp. Don't worry, it's fixable, albeait awkwardly. Go to www.proxy.org and try and access ninja through a proxy.

The proxy I linked to is quite quick for me, but it depends on yoru location and internet connection. The fact it works for you through a proxy must mean its an isp problem, and it's happened to me a few times before, though it usually sorts itself out within 24-48hrs.

Really good review. Totally true about the forums. I tried registering there and left a comment on the feedback forum (which says "tell us what you think"), but obviously they don't care unless you're a donator, because my post got deleted. If you're not willing to completely worship them, then the forums are useless (which is pretty sad because there's a front page article about the forums everyday).
It's a total love/hate relationship for me with NinjaVideo. They are completely arrogant and the main site articles are so ridiculous. Expect to see things like chatlogs that have no meaning what-so-ever, and ranting about how tired they all are. But also expect quality content daily (kinda).
So far they've been great with content. But recently they have gotten alot of traffic, and I believe their "hosting" has caught on. Almost all of their videos don't work at the moment, which is great in a way because it stops all their gloating, but it sucks because now I can't watch anything. However, you'll see a huge wall of text on there at the moment with a link to the forum post that, of course, has nothing but great comments on how awesome they are. But honestly, it doesn't matter how awesome you were, if you can't find reliable hosting then the site will never get back to what it was. I'll explain why their hosting isn't reliable in the next post since this is getting quite long.

It may seem like they are hosting the videos themselves, and quite possibly they want that illusion for the sake of getting more donations. However, I have no doubt it takes alot of time to upload the videos, and take care of things behind the scenes, so I'm not saying they don't deserve the donations, but I don't think they are straight about where the content is coming from.
Most of the content was hosted on Veoh, which is a crappy flash quality site. However, there is a type of exploit that lets you stream the full high-quality version you originally uploaded. I'm assuming Veoh is catching on and removing the majority of their videos (because of increased traffic or they are just getting better at it?) and that causes alot of the videos to 404. I noticed they are using other free hosts, like archive.org and even some free french hosting site. But archive.org is removing the videos fairly quick as well.
I really don't see a problem with using a 3rd party free host for the content, from a moral standpoint. But their whole back catalog of TV and movies is severely going to suffer from the hosts removing them. I don't know what the best solution is, but I don't see the site ever working 100% with the way it's being done. You can't rely on 3rd party hosting sites that will remove copyrighted material as soon as they find it. And they are finding it a lot faster now.
You are right, Anonymous. Veoh is cracking down on copyright violations. They must have developed some new method of detection because lots of ninja's stuff is getting deleted quick.
From what I could tell, ninja's old process was to upload to archive.org and then move the file to veoh from there. Currently it appears they are experimenting with alternative video hosts.
A few of us ex ninjavideo supporters broke off and started a similar website that can do the same thing as ninja, but we also have something they dont, something very necessary in this game: a link checker. Our vids are auto-removed when they die so users aren't clicking around looking for a vid that works. Also we try not to have big egos. Unfortunately our site is not live yet, but things are looking good.

As of right now NinjaVideo is using flash.. from MegaVideo. They basically have turned into every other crappy flash site. I'll just have to start using torrents alot or find some other means.

I have to agree with the recent criticism and observations. It seems that a lot of the newer content is now in flash only. I tried using the tips posted by one of their Ninja Tech Masters which worked great for me in the past but not so much now. It is hit or miss and I think it is the site. I wonder if that article in PC World caused a big influx of traffic and got the attention of the fuzz so to speak. I know in the veoh forums, there has been a growing small group who were bitching about how Veoh is not cracking down on Ninjavideo's exploits and not following its copyright violation policy. It looks like they started listening. As for the Ninjavideo forums, they are definitely only for the strong of heart. There are a few nice members who post but the majority are pretty damn arrogant. The problem is when you sign up, they tell you that the rules are not applied equally so you have to decide if you really want to post.
I really liked Ninjavideo but it isn't so special anymore if they have issues with their links and start using Flash instead of Divx. I did check out Zerosec and that looked cool actually.
It looks like NV still has problems. Too many videos going down and it seems that the flash links are the only things working. Also, they just released a new helper applet, 0.3.0. Let's hope it isn't so buggy.
Ironically because Ninjavideo's been using flash and their choices usually crash, have delayed sound or are removed from the server be it megaupload or other, I've now taken to checking surfthechannel for flash since there are more choices. It's a pity, but as an admitted leecher I go where the quality is better and Ninja's been going downhill. Their mainposts are ridiculous, I don't "expect" quality "service", I just go where quality is and since divx is off the market, flash is a leecher's only option...and seven links are available to you at surfthechannel.com

Been wanting to comment on ninjavideo for some time now, but have never even bothered on their forums because the don't take criticisms too well. So, this thread looks like a nice place to comment on my experiences and observations.
Been using ninjavideos for a while now and has become my go to place for new episodes. To be honest, they are the best at getting new content up asap and with top notch quality.
Beyond this, however, the sight, well, is made of "fail". All the potential to deliver is there, but a lot of things have bothered me throughout the months and has sent me to other sights for a majority of my streaming needs.
The majority of the library doesn't stream, or is missing all together. They may post to have 7 seasons of such a show, but your lucky if the current season is functioning. If you want to watch your show you'd best do it fast, for it is common that episodes two weeks old no longer stream properly. Sadly, a majority of their content is such. would estimate that about 80%+ of the content I have tried to watch are dead posts, even more so as of late. Stream quality and speeds vary; at times it is blazing fast, at other times, very slow or get stuck at some % or another. I;ve trolled through the forums, and have never wanted to post there. Th e admins can praise themselves all day long for all I care, but back up all the self glorification with some consistency and integrity of data. Ninjavideo seems to have the best product out there, if only they could get the delivery consistent and stable.
Regardless, the sight is appreciated and await each new show of my liking. Hopefully in the future their sight will be as great as their egos already think it is.

At least the flash files run nice with the proper aspect unlike the NV crap. Also, you can download the flash version and convert it to avi and it looks good. NV to me is too much hassle. Even the mainsite is not worth the effort anymore since links don't last long. Personally, I think the damn applet they used is still too buggy. NV uses that applet to hide where the vids are being uploaded from. You can forget about the forums! Stay the hell away! Don't register!

BTW guys, that is why NV is going to be very tough to take down because of the fact that they don't host the vids themselves. That is really why the RIAA and MPAA haven't been able to take them down yet. Heck frigging PC World touted them. As for Veoh, they are getting smarter about taking down NV links and I think Megavideo will get wise too but again, part of the reason people donate to NV ain't for the mainsite stuff but the hidden stuff in their private forums that you can't see even if you are registered and logged in unless you are one of their so called private members. It don't matter if the mainsite vids are all down, as long as the private stuff works, people will donate.

Why do you think they use a java applet? As Abemore mentioned before, it is a redirect from a 3rd party site. A lot of it is through Veoh and Veoh is catching it much quicker. That is why a lot of the mainsite links are always down. I don't think they will be taken down but eventually, they will go entirely to flash. Besides, anyone noticed that there are less movies on the site or the fact that when a movie gets put up, the link only lasts like a max of an hour then a flash link gets put up.
Besides, the ISPs are starting to get wise and are checking content logs and they know who the heavy users are. They know they are the ones who upload and download.
That will be what will slow sites like NV, not the damn RIAA or MPAA.

For what is was, ninja was pretty good. I liked Stage 6 better, and they were nice on Stage 6. Phara and the others don't seem to care at all about the people who are making their site possible. And without viewers, they'd just be losers posting tv shows for each other to watch.
Now here's the funny thing: I've been a huge fan of mIRC for a long time. I started using the klipper and xdcc about 6 years ago. The content you find on ninja is on the irc servers BEFORE ninja has them. It's probably where they're getting them. The downside to using mIRC aside from it's blazing fast download speeds (I've gotten over 3 mbps downstream) is the fact that it does take a little time to load the servers then load the channels then wait for the files to load. However, if you have half an hour to do all that, you can set it to dl gigabytes and in the morning you will have everything. My record so far is about 30 gigs in 8 hours. The speeds do vary, some files will stop altogether, but it beats the hell out of torrents and any p2p. Newsgroups are another way to go.
The biggest thing I hate about ninja aside from their lame attitude is that they blame everyone else for the files not working. "Update your divx, clear your cache, delete your temp files, do you have service pack 3?" Most of their excuses have nothing to do with web content playing and it's clear it's a server side issue. Especially when every single other website is working just fine for streaming except theirs. Then they have the balls to say 75% of the files are working fine when I can attest to no more than 10% working without using the crappy flash links.
Here's the best part: if they enlisted the aid of the masses who use their website, they would have the power to fix everything. Imagine networking all the users. But whatever, they can all go jump off a cliff, and I kind of hope they do. I bet some day someone will go looking for them like at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
NV is going the way of most flash sites. It is all hit or miss. Really honestly, who the hell goes on their forums anyway. I don't see anything special. There are a lot of other sites out there. What isn't funny is NV's visibility and that manifesto will eventually get the MPAA and others to take a real hard look. Well, not to mention all the previous problems with nv, now they fail at the thing that made them above the rest: getting show up fast and reliably. This has been going on for a week now, expecting shows to be posted but are a day late, or are never posted at all.

icefilms.info did not get deleted, however our host did suspend our account for about a day for using too much CPU. We got it back up and reduced a lot of the cpu intensive tasks so hopefully this wont happen again. you will see things are a bit different there now.

alot of the content is also missing or plays partially through.
also their use of automatic forwarded links, fucking obnoxious. once i had this happen 5 times in a row since the site isn't programmed properly so after you press "skip add" it forgets it sent you there in the first place, and sends you there again.
all in all, good quantity of videos. asinine advertisement techniques and buggy play back make you feel like a piece of candy is kept inches infront of your face behind an inch of plexiglass. look- but dont touch/taste.

I've been using Ninjavideo for a almost 8 months (Username: Aldmare) It seems to me that very few videos seem to have a problem, the biggest one that I can think of is when people try to play a video, you get a message that says something like, "This video couldn't load or it's not a true divx file, etc" It has happened to me and the first thing I check is to see if there is a new Divx version out. That seems to fix 99% of the problems. As for aforementioned codec problems, they provide links to the codecs so..
As for the forums, I use them, rarely for commenting. I did donate though! The forums also have a massive help section for people who still have problems. I run on DSL (200k max dl speed) and I can stream and watch a movie without any interruption. Frequently the movie with finish buffering long before I finish watching. That is, while only providing 2 min or so buffer time before I start watching.
People are looking for a reliable site to watch movies, shows, docs, etc for free and that's fine. But wanting that and a site that will blow you then spoon you is a little much imo. Ad's are 1 click away from gone, hit back for redirects, do something else while it buffers, like sleep! Quit bitching, it's free and Phara is h07.

And then the comments under the vid links and personal crap, wow. These guys were admins from Alluc until they were fired/banned for being immature. Go figure. Go ask alluc admins about them. I just use OVGUIDE to search for my vids and never go to NV links. I boycott them along with so many others. I just read through the threads on videos that don't work on Ninja. Their common responses were "Stupid bitch, moron, etc". That's how they reply to people. Allegedly because people didn't post the problem in the right format, but if you look at the format they want something posted in it takes like two pages of reading, then they want to know things that make jack shit of a difference in playing videos. This is why I recommend using The Pirate Bay to get files. They are more than happy to answer questions and respond to complaints in a manner that is polite. Fuck Ninjavideo. I hope they get shut down.
Most of u cant take the free service of NV for what it is. The admins are full of themselves? Sure they are, since they spend their free time with making NV the great site it is. Just because nv is free doesn't give them the moral right to treat people like crap. Lots of websites are free and they treat people with respect. Like The Pirate Bay, and Mininova. Even the guys from Stage 6 treated everyone with respect. If nv managed to get everyone who uses it to stop using it, what would they have? HULU is an example of another free site. BUT that ONLY allows you to STREAM high quality videos, and ON TOP OF THAT!! only from the USA.

If you know how to use a torrent program or XDCC and fserve, you should never have a problem with "getting caught". How exactly is using a modern tool to download files living in the past compared to using a website to do the exact same thing? If you don't like two-way file sharing, you can disable uploads, or you can just use mIRC to get files. As for them being able to have an attitude because they're the biggest and the best, that's ridiculous. Stage 6 was the best and they weren't assholes about people's problems. Have you looked at how to post a comment or question on NV? It's literally pages of instructions of things you need to do and even then your odds of getting banned are about 99 out of 100 times you post anything. They don't have one safe thread in their blog section where people can post without retard rules or getting banned for making suggestions. Oh, and when something goes wrong they ALWAYS blame the user, they blame the browser, they blame divx, they blame anything and everything without ever saying something like "We know it's on our and and are working on a sloution".

I don't use nv to watch anything any more. Not since phara and the rest of the cunts there banned me for asking questions without answering their numerous b.s. questions. I've been using ninjavideo pretty much exclusively for tv shows and such for the last 6months. I've never had any problems. I run greasemonkey and then noscript to remove all the BS popups, then I set the divx plugind player to 100% buffer then use VLC player to watch the avi as it downloading into my TMP dir. Really all very simple, I've never visited the forums, but from I've read here, I probably shouldn't.
Before this I used a combination of sites that mostly linked to meagavideo (veoh, Quicksilverscreen, etc..) This was a pain b/c there was a 72min limit (I had to change ip address to reset this every time). I'm also not a big fan of watching in flash, the quality looked crappy.
I tried torrents, but can't get the avi to play at the same time as the torrent is downloading.
All in all i've had a pretty good experience w/ NV.
Are there other sites that works like NV? It seems to mostly leech from megauploads. It would also be good to have a backup in case NV goes down.

This is the *most* critical feature. It's really not a matter of desperation, but more of convenience. Why would I want to wait 30mins to watch a show if I can get it on the spot? What if I decide to see two episodes back to back? Does it make sense to wait 60mins for download? Could you honestly tell me that if you had a choice to watch something right away or wait 30mins you would chose to wait?
The source of the content is of minimal importance to me, I mean really who cares? The studios made the show/movie and from there I don't care who does the "distributing" as long as it works and I can get it. The one thing that kinda bugs me about NV is the stupid comments they put under their banners
Running linux, I'm pretty well insulated against viruses and spyware -- no MS crap to worry about breaking. But I can see that being a big negative for windows users.
On a side note, I just checked out icefilms.info. It's pretty sweet. Big thumbs up for that site! Between that and NV all my bases are covered.
I love how you had to add that dig about MS users and viruses. Played any good games lately Linux? Linux straight up sucks. For everything. Everything except most of the viruses out there, but anyone with Windows knows how to beat viruses in a short amount of time. With Windows you also know what happened if there's an error and how to easily fix it. Not to mention we don't rely on crappy open source apps for everything.
As for watching episodes back, how exactly would you plan on doing that if you can't wait 30 minutes for a download? To watch two episodes of 24 back to back you would have had to have waited a week for the extra episode to come out. So you can wait a week but not 30 minutes? I suppose in that remote scenario it could be an issue for users like you, but the rest of us don' have a schedule we have to watch a show at. I can download the episode while I play a few maps of UT3 or COD and watch when I'm done playing. Or, in the scenario you listed I could go to Fox's website and watch last week's episode, or maybe catch it on Hulu, and by the time the episode is over the current week's will be downloaded. If time is really that big an issue and you have to be watching at that time why not just watch it on tv? I download stuff because I'm rarely home when it airs. Having already missed the airing waiting 30 minutes more doesn't hurt.
And NV is loaded with spyware and viruses. Why even go to a website that would put it's users through that on top of them already thinking they're the video gods? Alexa ranks them around 2300. They rank TPB at around 100. TPB is 23 times more popular. Gee, I wonder why.
You must be confused, as the MS bit is a followup to your complaint about NV making your "MS Security Essentials going batshit" as in my case there is no such problem, therefore I can't sympathize with you and personally condemn NV for viruses or "intruders".
I haven't played games since the 90s, just not my thing. Maybe why the full switch to Linux last year was an easy one. Just like you, I was concerned that there may be some WIN related tasks that I may not be able to accomplish under Linux. So I setup a WinXP virtual machine to handle these unforeseen problems. To my surprise I can do everything in Linux that I could do with Windows. Linux even runs most Win apps with ease in WINE. This is a very unbiased account as I have been a Windows user since win3.1. I'm confident if you give me a list of games you play, I will be able to run 90% of the w/o problems. Linux for me is very stable, no BS, no "anyone with Windows knows how to beat viruses in a short amount of time", no nothing. It flat out just works.
It's good that you mentioned 24 as here is an obvious scenario that you failed to account for -- I missed all the episodes of this season's 24 from ep4 until two weeks ago. I caught up by watching one or two episodes every few days or so until last night. I was a bit confused when you said "but the rest of us don' have a schedule we have to watch a show at" because that is exactly the point I was trying to make. With NJ anytime a thought pops in my head about watching a show -- I am watching it in under a minute. In the case of our 24 example, one day I walked through the door, tossed my keys on the counter, I realized I had some time before my next appointment, I went to NJ, and within a minute I was seeing the 24 clock countdown signaling the beginning of the episode. Tell me where the scheduling in that is. If I was following your routine, instead of NJ I go to EZTV and wait 30mins for my torrent to download, then another 30 after if I decide to watch another episode. Maybe it's just me but I prefer efficiency with my spontaneity.
Lastly, I hope that NJ stays low on Alexa ranks as here, more traffic does not effect the amount of content, and more importantly b/c you don't really want to draw attention to yourself when you're peddling copyrighted material. It's ironic that you would compare TPB, as those guys have been in legal battles and if I'm not mistaken, serving time in jail and paying huge fines Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with them being 23 times more popular. This is also the same reason I don't want Linux to become popular b/c more assholes will start making malware for it and otherwise cause trouble. I hope MS keep drawing all the attention. As they say my friend, there is security in obscurity.

As much as it pains me to say, it seems that our dear Ninja is gone. With the fed crackdown seizing the domain, i now have nowhere to turn to for the quality of broadcast that I embraced in Ninja. To Phara and all the other contributors and moderators, I say thank you and goodnight. I hope it returns but I fear it won't. I used to love Suprbay also, but lately they've been handing out bans left and right, just like the guys at NV. Suprbay found my post offensive, but not the thread by the OP. Explain that one to me. That's some NV crapola right there. This is my second ban from them in a year.
Maximum PC banned me entirely from the forum. I have to use ip blockers if I want to post, but they hand out bans for just about anything, so it get's tiresome even bothering. On MP any time you disagree with someone calling you or your question stupid, they ban you for flaming. See what I mean? I have a blog. I accept all comments. I'll even post the negative ones. I don't care. It's freedom of speech imo.

ninjavideo has been scuppered by big brother. which sucks big time as it was easily the best video site on the web. the best thing about ninja was that it gave you a list of all the latest movies and tv shows, which meant you didnt have to remember what date new tv shows would be released as you had that info on ninja. kinda like and online tv guide i guess.
im pissed as i never use a tv any more, preferring to use ninja instead.

Not really sure why my last post didn't show up, so I'll repeat it: http://eztv.it/calendar/ has all the shows coming out and the magnet links to download them. Go to yahoo's movie page to see what movies are out or coming out then find them on TPB or mIRC.

Exactly. I never used NV to actually watch stuff. They had too much on their site that would try to worm it's way into your system, and streaming video sucks imo anyway. I'd rather wait for it to download then watch it.
So yeah, NV for tv list, TPB to DL.
